General information

About EPS in general

EPS is a programme that is offered to third year university/college students. Mostly it is project working within your own project team. The project team includes 4-6 international students. In the beginning of EPS you will also attend some classes, which are held by university professors from different countries. The courses are taught in English.

The course is created with engineering students in mind, but other students are also welcome. Economics and management, marketing, architecture etc.

Assessment:

Marks are derived from the following sources:

  • The supervisors and external examiners allocate marks from observations of students’ activities and assignments, from documentation submitted and from the final examination.
  • Student oral presentations and participation in discussions.
  • Evaluation of student participation in the study program courses after deliberation and discussion with the course lecturer, and a short course exercise.

The EPS Scheme:

The semester is divided into two parts:
A study programme comprising short intensive courses, taught by European teachers and a project-based period developing student initiative and individual creativity. Here teams of four to six students work together on multidisciplinary projects designed to develop their co-operation and communication skills considerably. Projects are carefully chosen and provided by Norwegian companies.

Subjects included in the study programme (may be slightly altered from one year to another, but the main bulk of subjects will remain intact):

  • Environmental Subjects
  • European Law
  • Communication Skills (Team- building and teamwork)
  • International Marketing
  • Project Management
  • Concurrent Engineering Techniques
  • Engineering Product Design
  • Languages (English and Basic Norwegian)
  • Cultural & Social Activities
  • Creative problem solving/ systematic innovation

These subjects are chosen to augment the work being done on the Industrial Project. They are taught by staff of the host university and visiting lecturers from the participating institutions. The schedule for EPS-Oslo 2008 is not expected to be completed until january 2008.

Download the coursebook from 2008 here in pdf format (to be published soon). Some of the supporting courses will be altered after the evaluations from EPS-Oslo 2006, but most of the subjects will be taught as described in the coursebook.

Academic Recognition

Universities which would like to send students on a European Project Semester (EPS) should ensure that the EPS is an acknowledged part of their curriculum. Please require further details if necessary. The semester is a 30-credit unit course according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The project work involved amounts to 20 credit units and short intensive courses cover the remaining points. It is also possible for graduate engineers to participate
