The primary goal of iAccess (Integrated Access Control for Health Care Information Systems) is to study principles and develop a model for integrated access control for health care information systems, thereby contributing to the access control research field and enabling more efficient and secure information dissemination in future health care services and healthcare research.

The project is based at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. The project leader is Øystein Nytrø from the department of computer and information science at NTNU and the Norwegian Electronic Health Record Research Centre. The project is also an inter-organisational project, incorporating PhD-projects from two different universities (NTNU and the University of Oslo). The reason for doing this is to be able to merge the extensive technical and clinical knowledge available at NTNU with the unique environment at the University of Oslo that combines technical and legal knowledge. User-involvement is another key factor in the project. This will be realized through the participation from the IT-unit of the [http://www.hemit.no/english/ Central Norway Regional Health Authority] and Rikshospitalet University Hospital.

SINTEF will in the initial phase of the project develop a handbook for surveying implemented or planned access control integration efforts and comparing these to best-practices and legislative requirements. SINTEF has extensive experience in the field of health care informatics and information security/access control.
