Deleting files

Why ITEA deletes your files

Some information about stud.ntnu.no

stud.ntnu.no is a system for all the students at all of NTNU. We're trying to give every student a good offer, with a home directory, homepage and mail. We're also trying to divide all the resources equally, so that everybody can take use of the system. We have a limited amount of disc space, and with over 18000 students that equals 1 GB pr user.

Why we're checking the disc usage

How we delete files

The disc surveillance that is done is a fully automatic process. We don't manually check if people are above or below the quota. If you have exceeded your quota, you will be notified on a Monday. If you're still above the quota by Wednesday night, the largest files on your home directory will be automatically deleted. This will happen as long as you're above the quota of 1 GB. However, if you are not notified about the problem in advance, the files shouldn't be deleted.

Extended quota

Since we're trying to divide all the resources equally among the users, every student has the same quota as a basis. But some of the faculties have made arrangements for their students, so that they can have an extended quota. This solutions is working out well, it's not affecting the joint resources.

If you're a student and you need a larger quota you may apply for that. You should substantiate why you need it, and for how long. Extended quota is only available for a short period of time. You should get in touch with your own faculty for more information.

If the faculty hasn't made that deal with ITEA, you can't get an extended quota.

Conclusion

We wish to give all the students the best possible offer, and we think we contribute to this by making sure that there's always enough available disc space.
