Error message "relaying denied" when sending e-mail

This problem will occur if you try to use the outgoing server on NTNU, smtp.stud.ntnu.no, without being connected via the NTNU network. (If your IP adress does not start with 129.241)

Symptoms

• You can get your mail using POP and/or IMAP (POP is no longer an option for stud.ntnu.no), but sending mail creates the error message "Relaying denied" and/or error code 550.
• It is still possible to send e-mail to addresses that ends with ntnu.no.
• The error only occurs when you are not using the NTNU network (or the dial-up service).

Solution

Use another SMTP-server for outgoing mail. Most internet providers have servers for their customers. For instance:

• Nextgentel: mail.broadpark.no
• Telenor: online.no
• Telia Internet: mail.telia.com
• Tele2: mail.c2i.net
• BlueCom: smtp.bluecom.no
