Restoring INBOX

After your files have been restored, you will have a directory below your home directory called "restored_files". You can check this by logging on to login.stud.ntnu.no and typing ls -ld restored_files. You will get some information about the directory if it exists.

Enter the restored_files directory by typing cd restored_files. There should be a directory named after the date of restoration, on the form YYYY-MM-DD. Type "ls" to see it, and "cd YYYY-MM-DD" to enter it. In this directory, there should be a directory called mail; enter it. In the "mail" directory are the different files containing e-mails. The interesting one is usually named INBOX. When you are certain it exists, you can type cd to get to the top level of your home directory. To move the e-mail you must type the following command: cat ./restored_files/YYYY-MM-DD/mail/INBOX >> ./mail/INBOX

This appends a copy of the contents of the restored INBOX file to the INBOX file which e-mail programs check for mail. You may find duplicate messages the next time you open the inbox, in addition to the deleted mail.

After moving other files you need, that have been restored, you should go to the top level again and remove the restored_files directory and contents by typing rm -Rf restored_files. Warning: You should be very careful using this command, as it is easy to remove too much.
