Reply-To with Pine
Pine is a text user interface e-mail client available at linuxlogin on stud. This article will give a short description on how to show and use the Reply-to field in Pine.
What is Reply-To?
Sometimes you might want the recipient of your e-mail to reply to another address than the one you are sending an e-mail from. This is often used when sending e-mails to e-mail lists and such. Of course it does not guarantee that they will reply to the address you have specified in the Reply-To field, but if they choose "Reply" when answering your e-mail most e-mail clients will use your specified Reply-To address.
Configuration
When you start Pine for the first time you will not find a Reply-To field, so to be able to use it you have to configure Pine. This is how:
- Start Pine
- Press S to enter Setup
- Press C to enter Config
Do not change anything unless you know what you are doing.
Press CTRL+W to enter search-mode (where is). Type customized-hdrs (customize headers) and press enter. If you have done everything correctly you should be in the field customized-hdrs. Press C to enable editing. Type Reply-To: and press enter.
You have now added Reply-TO to the headers and now we need to save your settings. By pressing E you will exit Setup and be prompted as to whether or not you want to save your changes. If you want to do so, press Y, if not, press N.
Sending e-mail
Now we want to test to see if you managed to configure Pine correctly, so choose Compose Message so you can send an e-mail. The Reply-To field will not appear, as it is one of the special headers and you need to press CTRL+R and it will appear. Then you are set and can edit the field just like you do with the other fields.
