WINS servers

WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) is maps a computer's name to its IP address. WINS only works for Windows computers and uses the computer's NetBIOS name. This works in the same way as DNS (Domain Name System), except that DNS maps a hostname (e.g. gaupe.stud.ntnu.no) to its associated IP-address (and vice versa) instead of a NetBIOS name.

A Windows computer is only able to use NetBIOS names, e.g. for mapping your homedir, if its WINS settings are correct.

You can change your WINS settings by choosing Network in the Control Panel. Click on Properties linked to the TCP/IP-Protocol.
