Programs for statistics

There are generally three different programs for statistics available at NTNU; Mintab, S-Plus and SPSS. In addition there is an utility called SciCraft under development at NTNU. You also have access to various programming languages and statistics-libraries through NTNU. More information about this is available under Other tools for statistics.

Minitab

MINITAB is an interactive program for statistics with a user-friendly interface. MINITAB is used as a educational tool at NTNU.

With MINITAB we can read data from different sources, edit data and perform calculations. We can also do many different statistical analyses and present the results through graphics, among others. MINITAB includes a programming language.

We have an unlimited "site"-license for Minitab at NTNU, and the program can therefore be installed on your home computer. Information about system requirements and other general information.. A tutorial is available on the cd, but you can also find an introduction here.

S-Plus

S-PLUS is a comprehensive program for statistics. It is much more advanced than Minitab and SPSS - The amount of built-in functions are much larger. In addition it is possible to use own programs in S-plus or forexample C++. The program have plenty of graphical possibilities. S-plus is used a lot within statistical research.

S-Plus is available through a collaboration purchase, and can be used by all students at NTNU and all employees at those institutes that have paid to be part of the collaboration. It is possible for institutes and individuals to purchase into the collaboration. Members of the Collaboration purchase:

If you need a user guide to get started with S-PLUS you can Look at this documentation from S-Plus.

SPSS

SPSS is a comprehensive statistical data handling and data analysis tool. SPSS Base and a long complement of add-on modules are available through NTNU. For more information about the program see SPSS program information (Norwegian).

All SPSS products are freely available to all students at NTNU, and to all employees at the following faculties:

At the rest of NTNU, the program needs to be licensed yearly by a personal license to individuals.

The agreement includes:

More information

SciCraft

SciCraft is a tool that makes it possible to integrate methods from other calculation software. SciCraft currently supports R, Python and Octave/Matlab. SciCraft also has built-in functions. It is Open Source, and is therefore available freely from the SciCraft website:

Other tools for statistics

In addition to programs purely for statistical purposes, there are also various programming libraries with good statistical subroutines. NAG Fortran 77, Fortran 90 and the C library can be used for statistical calculations. These libraries can be used together with various program libraries, and are available for installation on employee computers and in student computer labs. They can't be installed on student's personal computers.

Another tool that is useful for statistical calculatons is Matlab. It is available for employees and students at NTNU, but the toolbox for statistics is only available for employees connected to the NTNU network. For license information and a short introduction, see this link.
