Text editors for UNIX
There are of course several text editors for UNIX-systems, and which one you want to use depends on what you will use it for and what you like. We recommend testing the different ones until you find one you like and fits your use.
- vi, vim (article in Norwegian) and view are a group of text editors that are based on ex. They may be a bit difficult to understand in the beginning, but they are very functionable and offers easy configuration to fit your uses.
- pico (article in Norwegian) is a much more simple text editor suited for beginners. It is also the text editor used by default when using pine.
- emacs (article in Norwegian) is another advanced text editor like the first one we mentioned. It is also configurable to allow for easier editing of HTML, LaTeX, etc.
- xemacs is the X-based interface of the previously mentioned text editor, emacs. It is easier to configure with its toolbar and contains pretty much the same options as emacs.
- ex, ed and red is a line text editor. That means you edit one line at a time. Not recommended if you find vi and emacs difficult.
- xedit is another X-based text editor. You might have seen it before when using Opera and choosing 'View source' from a page.
