Windows NT/2000/XP, connecting to your home directory.

NTNU's file servers make it possible for you to connect to your home directory as if you were working on a computer inside NTNU's network. This way you will get a secure connection, which gives you an easy access to your files. This is also much easier than using a SFTP-client.

VPN

If you are not connected directly to NTNU's network you need to connect through a VPN client to connect to your home directory. This to maintain security. Install and connect to NTNU through a VPN client, and proceed reading this page.

Connecting

Open Windows Explorer and choose Map Network Drive from the Tools menu. In the next window, type which folder you wish to connect to.

You can choose connect to these directories:

Path: Connecting to: Comment:
\\sambaad.stud.ntnu.no\username Your homedir on www.stud.ntnu.no. Replace username with your user name.
\\webedit.ntnu.no\folk Your home page on folk.ntnu.no. These files can be read by anyone.
\\ansattsmb.itea.ntnu.no\username Your unix-homedir on www.ansatt.ntnu.no. Replace username with your user name (employees only).
\\home.ansatt.ntnu.no\username$ Your windows-homedir on www.ansatt.ntnu.no. Replace username with your user name (employees only).
\\ansatt.itea.ntnu.no\adm Public directory on www.ansatt.ntnu.no. Limited access for most employees.
\\webedit.ntnu.no\www NTNU homepages Limited access for most employees.

Now click on Finish. If you are asked to type your user name / password, follow the instructions below.

Username

All students and employees must type win-ntnu-no\ in front of their user name and they must use the same user name [1] and password to the different folders as they use to log onto other computers/domains at NTNU with. E.g. a user with user name "nalle" must type this in the User name panel: win-ntnu-no\nalle

Common problems

The computer name

If your computer name already is in use on the network you are trying to connect to, you need to give your computer a new, unique name. You can e.g. name it after your user name and add a few numbers: username031. The computer name is only used when you are connecting to external networks so changing it will not give you any difficulties.

Renaming your computer:

WIN NT/2000: Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Select the flag 'Network Identification' and type the new name in the Computer Name panel.

WIN XP: Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Select Computer Name and then Change. Type your new computer name.

Timeout

The connection will time out after a while if the connection is not used. To reactivate the connection you only need to click on it. This timeout might give you problems when working with Microsoft Office files from the network. We therefore advice you to download these files to your computer and work with them locally. When you are done you can transfer them back.

Footnotes

[1]: If you have not received user name and password, you can get this by showing up at the Orakel Office. You will find the Orakel Office at the 1. floor in Sentralbygg 2 (the 2. Central Building) on Gløshaugen.
