VPN on PDA - Palm T|X
Webauth
The standard browser for Palm OS5, Blazer, do not handle
NTNUs webauth.
If you want to use webauth, you will have to use another browser to authenticate yourself;
after doing this, you can, if you want to, use Blazer.
When you have authenticated through webauth, you will have access to the usual services
(ie. web, e-mail, SSH). For a complete list, see the article about webauth mentioned above.
If you need other services, or you want a secure, encrypted connection, you will have to revert
to VPN.
With some browsers, it is possible to register as "Guest". You will then only have
access to web, and you will have to use VPN for anything else but web.
Installing VPN
At the time of this article's writing, movianVPN is the only VPN-client for Palm that supports IPSec, the system used by NTNU. Other clients, like Mergic VPN, use another system called PPTP. Buy and install movianVPN - www.anthavpn.com). If you are feeling uncertain about wether it will work or not, you can try out a free demo-version: movianVPN version 4.00, build 112.9p is tested and works on a Palm T|X. (Palm OS 5.4.9, Garnet).
Configuring movianVPN
-
When the installation is complete, enter the normal Prefs-program.

-
Choose VPN.
If you have installed the full-version of movianVPN, and you cannot find VPN as one of
the options in Preferences, you will have to install VPNPnl1.prc
and VPNPnl_enUS1.prc
These come bundled with movianVPN. If you use a demo-version, choose these instead of the
program named movianVPN.
-
Check the box marked "VPN Account:" to create a new account.
Give the account a meaningful "Policy name".
Choose "Cisco VPN Concentrator 3000".
Set "Gateway Address" to vpn.ntnu.no.
Remember to check the box Use Extended Authentication Press next(arrow)
-
Group Name: alle
Group Password: passord
User Name: your username
-
Check the box to approve.
-
If you usually use the NTNU-wireless, you might as well enable Auto-Connect.
You will then connect via VPN every time you connect to the network.
-
First: connect to the network. The picture shows a connection to the
wireless network at NTNU (you see the signalstrength bars).
-
You are being connected.
-
When connected, you are prompted for your username and password.
This is your username and password at NTNU.
-
If everything works properly, you will now be connected to NTNUs network via VPN.
Every program installed on your Palm (that uses network) will now use this
VPN-connection.
