Erasmus is designed to promote the mobility and exchange of teaching staff and students from institutions of higher learning within the European Uninon (EU) and in the European Economic Area (EEA). Students in a European Union member state or an EEA country may apply through their home university for financial support for a period of study between 3 and 12 months within the same academic year. The Erasmus programme ensures that students will receive full recognition of this period of study as an integral part of their overall course or study plan at their home university. To help students make the most from their study abroad, the European Commission has developed a European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. Norwegian institutions of higher education converted to the ECTS credit point system and grading scale in 2003.
Gjøvik and Lillehammer University Colleges have been awarded the extended Erasmus University Charter for the period 2007-2013.
