"Development, operation, maintenance and evolution of information systems from a user and organisational perspective"

Welcome to the Wiki pages of the Information Systems Group of the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen! Please leave a note in our GuestBook...

What is an Information System (IS)?

"Information Systems is the study of the information technology (IT) in the modern organization in order to understand the context of technology in a corporation" (from Wikipedia, accessed 2007.07.01). Information systems is therefore inherently a multi-disciplinary field involving researchers with backgrounds in technology, the social sciences, the humanities, psychology, business administration, mathematics and other fields. What is Information Systems as a Field of Academic Study?

"Information Systems as a field of academic study encompasses the concepts, principles, and processes for two broad areas of activity within organizations: (1) acquisition, deployment, and management of information technology resources and services (the information systems function) and (2) development, operation, and evolution of infrastructure and systems for use in organizational processes (system development, system operation, and system maintenance)." (From an ACM Report on the Information Systems Curriculum.) (more)

The IS Group at the University of Bergen

The Information Systems Group is part of the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen. The group is extensively involved in international co-operation and co-publication. Over the years, the group's members have participated in several European Networks of Excellence. We participate in several other international research groups and networks and have good publication rates in refereed international journals and conferences. We also regularly review academic papers for premier international journals and conferences. The group also cooperates widely with other Norwegian research institutions. Our national research partners are located at NTNU in Trondheim, SINTEF and UiO in Oslo, as well as Agder University College in Kristiansand. (more)

Research focus

We study the development, operation, maintenance and evolution of information systems (ISs) from a user and an organisational perspective. The group is interested in understanding how information systems can be designed to best match the needs and individual differences among user populations and the needs and local differences among user organisations. One emphasis is on how models of information systems and their user organisations can be used to develop, operate, maintain and evolve information systems that are flexible and tailorable to individual and local needs, yet interoperable.
