Invitation

On behalf of the organizers we cordinally invite all interested and invol-ved in the various aspects of chitin and chitosan to participate in the 5th European Conference of the European Chitin Society (EUCHIS’02).
The conference will be held in Trondheim, Norway from June 26–28, 2002.

Location and accomodation

The conference will take place at the Gløshaugen campus of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), located within walking distance to downtown Trondheim. Accomodation will be arranged at centrally located hotels and a nearby youth hostel.

Call for contributions

All participants are invited to contribute a presentation (oral communi-cation or poster) relevant to the topics in the scientific programme.

General information

Proceedings
All invited and accepted contributed papers will be published as a book, which will be distributed to the conference participants.

Language
The official language of the conference is English.

Trondheim
Trondheim, founded in 997 A.D., is the third largest city in Norway, perhaps best known for Nidarosdomen, the gothic cathedral that is both a national shrine and a monument of Norway. Trondheim is a national center of technological education, research and development.
Normally the weather at the end of June is pleasant in Trondheim, with daylight almost around the clock. The temperature may vary between 10–25 degrees C (50–77 degrees F), and rainy days may occur.

Travel information
Trondheim can be reached by car, train, boat or plane. Domestic flights between Trondheim and the international airport in Oslo is frequent. There are also direct flights between Copenhagen and Trondheim. Participants may also travel to Trondheim by the coastal express from Bergen, a journey of about 30 hours along the rugged Norwegian coastline. The Conference Secretariat will upon request supply you with additional information about this possibility.

Accomodation
Rooms have been reserved at several hotels in the center of Trondheim in various price categories. Prices of hotels will range from NOK 650 to NOK 1150 per night (including breakfast), or NOK 195 at the youth hostel.
The number of rooms in each price category is limited. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations have been made for the conference period.

Arrival
Registration is on Tuesday June 25 from 16.00 to 19.00, and from 8 a.m. on Wednesday. After each flight arrival there is a bus service from the airport to the downtown bus terminal (NOK 54). Please note that Trondheim airport (Værnes) is located approximately 30 km from the city (taxi will cost approximately NOK 450). Taxi from downtown Trondheim to the campus will cost about NOK 60. With the confirmation of registration and hotel booking, a detailed map of Trondheim will be enclosed where the location of the hotels will be marked.

Information for contributors

Each participant at the conference is entitled to present one paper or one poster. Authors may, however, be listed on more than one abstract.

Papers (Invited and contributed)
Time limits for speakers are as follows: Invited papers: 40 minutes (including question time). Contributed papers: 20 minutes (including question time).
Slide projectors for 50mm square mounts and overhead projec-tors will be provided. Projectors for previewing slides will be available. In addition, facilities for electronic presentation will be available.

Posters
All authors of posters must also provide an Abstract in English. Each poster will be allocated a space of 120 cm (height) and 90 cm (width) on a suitable mounting board.

Abstracts
All contributors must submit an abstract in English. Abstracts must be typed and prepared according to the enclosed "instructions for abstract submission". Abstracts will only be accepted from participants who have paid the appropriate registration fees.
The organizers, along with the Scientific Advisory Committee, reserve the right to transfer suggested oral presentations to posters.

Instructions for preparation of abstract
The abstract should be prepared according to the following instructions:
• Type entirely within the format 15.24 x 22.9 cm (6 x 9 in).
• Use 12 points Times New Roman typeface; single space.
• Title must be typed in capitals. Give one line spacing and type the name(s) of the author(s) on a new line; superscript* used for presen-ting author; give first name, middle initials, then last name. Leave another blank line and type in italics the institution(s) where the research was carried out, including their address and e-mail address. Use superscripts a,b,… to distinguish between authors with different affiliations. Title, author’s names and institutions should be centred.
• Give one line space and type up to three key-words, without indenta-tion (to be used to construct the index of the printed abstract book).
• Give one line space and type the text single spaced, without indentation.
• If references are mentioned, please list them after a blank line in the order in which they are cited in the text [1].
• Formulae, equations and figures are part of the Abstract and should
not be submitted separately. Please remember that the abstracts will be reduced to A5.

The abstract submission deadline is March 1, 2002. Only one page will be allowed for each abstract. Send the abstract by e-mail as a RTF file to:
Inger.Mari.Nygaard@chembio.ntnu.no

In addition, fill in the Abstract submission form and return it together with one camera-ready original and three copies of the abstract.
