Dementia is extremely costly for society in several ways: the personal catastrophe for the patient, the burden on the relatives and caregivers, and the financial costs to health authorities and the State in general.
In Norway, these costs are conservatively estimated to around 15 billion Norwegian crowns annually. With the current trend of an ageing society, the number of dementia patients is set to double in 20 years - as will the costs. Exploring strategies that prevent the development of dementia is therefore a matter of urgency. Financial support towards this goal is therefore an investment in the future.
Research is expensive and we are most grateful to all who have contributed financially to the project so far, regardless of the size of the contribution.
