M. Phil. in English Language and Linguistics

Master of Philosophy in English Language and Linguistics

– About the programme of study
Would you like to study English language and linguistics in an exotic country?

This international Master’s programme at NTNU gives you the opportunity to specialize within the field of English language and linguistics while living in one of the northernmost countries in the world.

The aim of the programme is to give students a deeper insight into issues such as modern English grammar and syntax, communication studies, first and second language acquisition and translation theories. The topics given at the department focus on academic theory and method.

The first year students may choose from the courses offered at the Department of Modern Foreign Languages or from courses offered by the Department of Language and Communication Studies, and approved by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.

A course introducing academic theory and method prepares you for your work with your Master’s thesis. The second year is devoted to writing the Master’s thesis (60 credits). This is an academic study of a particular topic within English language and linguistics. You will get supervision throughout the year. In the summer period between the first and second years the candidates are given the opportunity to return to their home countries to do fieldwork if this is necessary for the completion of their theses.
