The Master’s degree programme in Biology deals with the understanding of living organisms and how they constitute our world. The ability to see humans’ effect on life is increasing in importance. Our activities on earth require planning that make allowances for nature.
The Master’s degree studies can be oriented towards basic research or applied research. The common feature of this programme is that our basis is the interaction between organisms and their natural environment. Knowing about animals’ and plants’ adaptation to their ecosystems is also important. With extensive knowledge about the species we can closely examine the interaction between them, discover how different industries can benefit from this knowledge, and how the species are affected by human activities.
The work on your master’s thesis is usually carried out at the Department of Biology, with academic supervisors from the department. However, cooperation with other research environments is also common. You may also study abroad or stay at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) during your Master’s studies.
The degree programme offers six fields of study which are described below:
Cell and Molecular Biology
Ethology
Evolutionary Biology and Systematics/Taxonomy
Physiology
Marine Biology
Ecology
