Advanced Engineering/Master's Degree Programme, 5 years
Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
– About the degree programme
Would you like to help mankind produce energy, materials, food and medicines in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner?
Your options on completion of this study are numerous, ranging from Managing Director of the largest companies in Norway to research into environmentally-friendly energy production or biotechnology to operation and development of our largest industrial plants, for instance within the petroleum sector, just to mention a few. In some way or another, all of our most important industrial enterprises involve chemistry. In addition, the greatest scientific innovations today are within chemical engineering and biotechnology. The new technology, nanotechnology, enables us to control reactions at the molecular level, which presents major development opportunities for new products. A forward-looking education rooted in basic chemistry and technology subjects provides an excellent foundation for your future career.
Varied subjects offered The advanced engineering programme (technology programme) is a five-year long programme of professional study. The first half is common for all students, and is similar to the remaining Master's programmes in technology. In the other half of the programme, you choose one of the following fields of study:
Biotechnology
Chemistry
Chemical Engineering
Materials Chemistry and Energy Technology
Your options are many. Chemistry and Biotechnology cover a wide range of disciplines, and you may specialize within several different fields. Your skills in physics and mathematics will also be useful. You do not choose your field of study until you have completed two years and have gained insight into the different areas of specialization.
Lectures, laboratory experiments and group exercises are organized in the new building Realfagbygget at Gløshaugen, NTNU.
Challenges and Opportunities One of the major challenges ahead is to procure environmentally-friendly an renewable energy sources. You can help developing these. Perhaps you are able to make a new fuel cell for hydrogen-operated cars? Many people believe that solar cells will solve future energy problems. Did you know that much of the world’s silicon for solar cells and chips are produced by the Norwegian processing industry, and that this industry is experiencing rapid growth? The Master’s degree programme Chemistry and Biotechnology also provides a basis for developing and adopting new environmental technology, including membrane technology that can constitute a part of CO2-free gas power plants.
Medical-Technological Research Today, major progress is made within biotechnology. Examples are genetic research, cancer research and the development of new medicines. These fields will expand in the future and with an education in chemistry you may join the team. However, biotechnology is so much more than medicines – it involves anything from food, natural gas, and the use of DNA tests in trials, to brewing of beer and wine-making. Along with current research efforts in the search for new knowledge, great challenges will emerge in years to come as we attempt to find practical areas of application for this knowledge. In this connection we need new biotechnologists who are curious and critical.
Computer Simulation The ability to use computers to create models of chemical reactions and molecules is very important. Thanks to computers and our knowledge about the basic properties of atoms and molecules, we can for instance design new medicines against various diseases. Similarly, we can simulate what happens with the temperature on earth when we emit CO2 into the atmosphere, or how to make intelligent materials. Computer calculations within chemistry and biotechnology are exacting and complex. They require large calculation capacities, and some of the world’s best supercomputers are employed to conduct these calculations.
Oil and Gas Norway’s production of oil and gas will continue for at least another century. With this degree, this industry will welcome you, and many of our candidates end up with interesting and well paid jobs.
