Ansattutveksling gjennom Høgskolen i Bodø
Han dro ut på en måneds utveksling ved en av våre partnere i Spania;

Linfield College

Linfield College ligger i byen McMinnville i staten Oregon, ca 1 ½ time fra kysten, fjellene,

studenter
til Høgskolen i Bodø.

Visit from Linfield College, USA

Bodø University College (BUC) had the honour to welcome Sandy Soohoo-Refaei and
Michele L. Tomseth from Linfield College for a visit at the International Office on May 2nd.
This was arranged for the purpose of a possible exchange agreement between the two University Colleges.

By Kai-Martin Johnsen

Michele has been in Norway before. For two years she was a student and an employee in Norway. Because
of this and the fact that she has Norwegian ancestors made it an easy choice when Sandy asked her about
searching for exchange partners in Norway.

The reason that they contacted BUC was because they were curious after a visit to BUC’s web site, and as a
part of a learning experience.
The long-term purpose is to land an exchange agreement between BUC and Linfield College.

Linfield College

Linfield College is located in the city of McMinnville in the state of Oregon, app. 1 ½ hour from the coast,
Portland
and Vancouver (Washington), and app. 3-31/2 hours from Mount St. Helens.
McMinnville is a small
city with app. 30 000 inhabitants.

Linfield celebrates 150 years anniversary in 2008, and is one of the oldest colleges and universities on the
west coast.

By 2008 Linfield has exchange partners in Asia, Latin-America and Europe, but there is only one in Norway.
It was because of BUC’s location in northern Norway and the course portfolio BUC offers that Sandy and
Michel came to visit Bodø. Linfield offers only courses on bachelor level, so the variety of courses at BUC
will then become an adequate alternative for students on graduate level.

It is important for Sandy and Michele that, even though the students are on the other side of the world, the
students should feel like as if they still are at Linfield College. This is something that Sandy and Michele are
looking for when they visits a possible new partner institution.

Meeting with the faculties/schools and the International Office

It was with great expectations that they had a meeting with the International Office and the
International Coordinators for the Faculty of Bioscience and Aquaculture, the School of Professional Studies,
Bodø Graduate School of Business and the Faculty of Social Science.

Some of the subjects that were up for discussions concerned the weather/climate, spare time and the food.
These subjects appear to be important for students who are considering a semester in Norway.
Michele and Sandy also got information about the courses the Faculties/Schools offers to
International students, and seemed satisfied with the fact that these courses are in English.

Meeting an International student

We went to a fish restaurant in the evening with one of the international students; Kristy Lynn Johnson
from West Virginia. Michele and Sandy had a lot of questions for Kristy, and she had no problem answering them.
Most of the questions referred to how she prepared herself for a semester at Bodø University College, if she
enjoyed her stay, kind of food she ate, the standard of her housing, what she did in her spare time, if she was
happy with the University and how the educational system at the University works etc.

Both the answers and the food seemed to be satisfactory for Michele and Sandy, and they seemed eager
to start
recruiting students for exchange at Bodø University College.
