The PhD Program
The Norwegian School of Economics offers the PhD program for those
seeking academic research and teaching careers in the study of economics and
business administration. The program is geared specifically for those whose main
interest is scholarly research and teaching, and the majority of our graduates
work in academic institutions. Residence is required for the majority of the
full-time academic program's duration.
The overall purpose of the program is to give the student a deepened and
broadened theoretical and methodological knowledge, alongside the experience of
having completed a substantial piece of original scientific work. The conferral
of the PhD in economics and business administration signifies that the
candidate has attained expert competence in a major field of study. For the PhD, 180 credit points, where 60 credit points equal one year of
full-time studies, are required (45 from the course part and 135 from the
dissertation part). The degree should normally be conferred after
approximately three years.
The School's faculty are dedicated to research and some 50 chaired
professors are active in the area of business administration and economics. The
PhD student
body is a gathering about 75 men and women working in three different fields of
study. The program fosters close interaction between students and faculty; a
rapid shift from student to colleague is experienced by applicants.
Prerequisites
Applicants who have at least a Master of Science or comparable academic
degree will be considered for admission. An additional requirement is that the
academic education has to include one-and-a-half years of studies in business
administration or economics.
