Master’s Degree Programme, 2 years

Civil and Environmental Engineering

– About the degree programme

Engineers working in civil and environmental engineering make lasting impressions. As an Advanced Engineer you have taken the first step.

The Master’s programme is a two-year long supplementary study built on your previous education. This programme gives you the opportunity to specialize within the technology, and to learn and reach a deeper understanding of important topics in civil and environmental engineering. It is also possible to take courses which are not a part of the study at the College of Engineering.

You start with the 4th year at NTNU and may choose between the following fields of study:

  • Construction and Building
  • Structures
  • Roads, Transportation, Land use and Geomatics
  • Water and the Environment
  • Property Development and Management

Construction and Building. Focuses on the building process: planning and accomplishment of smaller and larger building projects. This field also offer specialization within building physics, energy consumption, fire engineering, geotechnics and arctic technology as well as marine civil engineering.

Structures. How we design and calculate buildings, bridges and other constructions at sea and on shore. This subject includes structural analyses and material behaviour. Major focus is on the use of the finite element method and constructional dynamics, and this field of study gives qualifications which can be used in most parts of the Norwegian industry.

Road, Transportation, Land use and Geomatics. Deals with planning, building and maintenance of the infrastructure in the transportation sector.

Water and the Environment. This field deals with the exploitation of water and water resources; drinking water, waste water, water for power production, flood control, etc. One of the other topics is environmentally friendly purification and waste disposal.

Property Development and Management. This subject focuses on management, operation, service and maintenance, and development of buildings and properties.

In addition, we offer specialization in geomatics, arctic technology, project management, and industrial ecology. As part of NTNU we also offer several courses in the social sciences/economy that are of interest for civil engineers.

Within the programme Civil and Environmental Engineering, three international Master’s programmes are also offered:

Courses from these specializations can be included in the range of subjects.

THE PROGRAMME THAT MEETS YOU

All ordinary courses in the civil engineering programme each awards 7.5 ECTS credits. Thus, during the 4th year you will take 4 courses each semester, primarily technology courses that strengthen your knowledge from your college education.

The 5th year at NTNU is devoted to specialization within a chosen field. In the autumn semester, you will work on a written project and take courses related to this project. The entire spring semester is devoted to the master’s thesis which has a stipulated duration of 20 weeks. The project and the thesis are often related to ongoing research projects and problems within industry.

Please refer to the 5-year Master in Civil and Environmental Engineering for further information about the degree programme.
