Marine Technology

– About the degree programme

Norway is a superpower when it comes to marine activities.

  • Offshore oil activities
  • Shipping
  • Fisheries and aquaculture

These industries constitute the backbone in the Norwegian economy and exciting and challenging tasks are out there waiting for you. Join us in shaping the future.

What do we expect from you?
The formal entrance requirements are Higher Education Entrance Qualifications with emphasis on mathematics and physics. Students with pre-courses in scientific subjects from public colleges may apply.

An interest in mathematics, physics and computing is an advantage, but enthusiasm and curiosity are equally important. The marine industry is international, so we welcome adventurous spirits and offer opportunities for working abroad.

The first two years of this degree programme emphasize basic technological subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc as well as basic marine technology. These basic subjects are the tool box you need to plunge into marine technological challenges.

Renowned research environment – CeSOS

The marine technical programme is located in a renowned research environment with long traditions. The large laboratories at the Marine Technology Centre provide unique opportunities for research, and no other university can offer their students anything like this.

The Marine Technology Centre holds one of NTNU’s three Centres of Excellence (Senter of Ship and Ocean Structures). Maritime and marine research are one of NTNU’s six priority areas.

Supplementary studies for engineers – admission to the third/fourth years

Engineers who would like to supplement their education with a Master’s degree in Technology/Advanced Engineer in Marine Technology, may do so at NTNU.

Engineers with marine-technology background may apply directly for the fourth year provided they have taken sufficient courses in mathematics and statistics. Engineers without relevant marine-technology background may apply for admission for the third year and complete their studies within three years. Please contact the Student Advisor for further information.

Studies abroad?

Parts of your study may be taken abroad at one of our cooperative institutions. More than 20% of our students choose to take their fourth or fifth year abroad. We cooperate with some of the most reputable universities in the USA and Europe.

Degree programme structure

The degree programme has two fields of study. You will choose your specialization after three years:

  • Marine Constructions
  • Marine Systems

Field: Marine Constructions
The course Marine Constructions is based on the disciplines Marine Hydrodynamics and Marine Construction Engineering. We emphasize the students’ ability to combine physical understanding with the use of mathematical models and computer-based methods of analysis. The course has three areas of further specialization (profiles).

  • Profile: Marine Hydrodynamics
A course in Marine Hydrodynamics may focus on the discipline hydrodynamics itself or the application of this in marine operations or subsea engineering. This course may also be combined with central courses from the specialization courses Marine Construction Engineering or Marine Cybernetics. Keywords: Sea loads, oceanography, ship hydrodynamics, marine operations, subsea engineering/technology.

  • Profile: Marine Construction Engineering
This course includes calculations and estimation of the effects of hydrodynamic and other loads; movements, deformations and internal forces in fixed and floating platforms and ships. Deformations and the strength of constructions are also calculated and controlled as regards the requirements of the operator and the authorities. You will also be trained in the evaluation of alternative solutions in view of requirements related to function and safety.
Keywords: Stress/tension, deformations and vibrations in constructions, construction analysis, materials and capacity, safety and reliability.

  • Profile: Marine Cybernetics
Keywords: Control and manoeuvring of ships and offshore constructions, electrical power generation and distribution, subsea robotics.

Field: Marine Systems
The course in Marine Systems focuses on the development of the students’ ability to see the big picture in technical problems related to design, analysis and operation of marine-technical systems. Knowledge from several subject areas is employed in finding solutions.

  • Profile: Marine Operational Engineering
Keywords: Maintenance, safety and operational quality assurance, energy optimizing, environmental engineering, fatigue life analysis and state control.

  • Profile: Marine Machinery and Combustion Engines
Keywords: Environmentally friendly energy consumption, production of electrical and mechanical energy, transportation of fluid and heat, fuel and combustion, cargo handling, instrumentation and measuring techniques.

  • Profile: Marine Projecting and Logistics
Projecting is to develop systems that are composed of multiple elements and meet the end-user’s requirements. The objective is to give the students theoretical knowledge and projecting skills. Keywords: Deciding main dimensions for ships, work out plans for maintenance and operation, operation analysis, logistics and quality management, fleet administration.

  • Profile: Marine Construction Techniques and ICT
The objective of this course is to provide a foundation to perform tasks that belong to most jobs related to the marine construction industry. Computer assisted construction (CAC) also constitutes a part to the extent it belongs in shipyards and construction workshops. Keywords: Efficiency improvement of building processes by using information technology, CAC, quality management, project management, manufacturing and materials engineering.

  • Profile: Fisheries and Aquaculture
Keywords: Design methods, operation and maintenance, aquaculture farms, fleet administration and supply chains, logistics management, stability and buoyancy.
