Advanced Engineering/Master's Degree Programme, 5 years
Materials Science and Engineering
– About the programme
This programme deals with materials – being able to know them and know how they behave. Would you like to make car components that save lives, or perhaps solar cells that produce electricity without polluting?
Norway is one of the world's largest exporters of many important materials, and materials technology is one of NTNU's and the Norwegian industry's priority areas. Today, materials technologists face exciting challenges within the petroleum industry in the North Sea, increased use of light metals in cars and airplanes, and the development of new materials for electronics and astronautics. Materials technology is also central to the development of environmentally-friendly energy such as solar cells and fuel cells.

Materials are the basis for all new technology. At NTNU we attempt to create and tailor materials. We research into materials for use within computer technology, transport, telecommunication, medicine and for the production of oil and natural gas.
Materials technologists must have comprehensive knowledge. For this reason, the first years of study will provide a profound theoretical basis in scientific subjects. In addition, you will from the beginning be introduced to important materials-technological subjects. You will learn how the materials are produced, their structures and properties, and how they are formed and used. In order to understand materials technology you will be given a thorough introduction to the basic subjects mathematics, physics and chemistry. After two years, you will face numerous options and our Student Advisors will help you choose a main profile that suits you perfectly.
From the third year onwards you may specialize within the following main profiles:
Ceramic Engineering and Functional Materials
Electrochemical Energy Technology
Corrosion and Surface Technology
Materials Development and Processing
Materials Selection and Product Development
Process Metallurgy and Electrolysis
Out into the world Materials technology is an international discipline. Our academic environment has excellent contacts all over the world, and many of our students take parts of their studies abroad at foreign universities. NTNU has good cooperation arrangements with foreign universities, and we will gladly help you organize your stay abroad.
