Advanced Engineering/Master's Degree Programme, 5 years

Applied Physics and Mathematics

–  About the degree programme

We know the history, we observe the present – but what about the future? Based on physics, system understanding and mathematical models we can predict the future. Climatic changes, the flow in oil reservoirs, and movements in share prices can be predicted. In the long run, those who predict the most accurately win, and can participate in shaping the future.

No man would have set foot on the moon, and no parent would have had the chance to see his or her child on ultrasound if not for creative people with a profound background from physics and mathematics. Transistors and lasers provided the basis for the development of computers and communication technology, and mathematical disciplines such as higher arithmetic, numerics and statistics form the basis for a substantial part of computer technology. Physics and mathematics are the seeds that produce almost all technological development.

NTNU has a national responsibility for the technological education in Norway. One third of the students are girls. Parts of the study can be taken abroad.

This programme is rooted in classic mathematical and scientific subjects. Mixed with technological problems, this provides a professional study with exciting challenges. A bunch of humanistic subjects or social studies ensures a comprehensive education. Extensive use of project work makes demands for independent work.

The first two years provide basic knowledge in:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Information Technology
