Email from Jean-Yves Garnier to the Oslo Group

Dear All,

Once again I would like to apologise for the delay in getting back to you regarding the most recent developments of the InterEnerStat initiative.

After the exchange of mails (on the choice of an expert to look at definitions) which followed our 2nd workshop last November, we have hired a consultant (Mr Tim Simmons). The consultant carefully looked at the definitions of each fuel provided by each organisation (available on the InterEnerStat website). For info, this is the address where you can access the website: http://www.iea.org/interenerstat_v2/

Over the last months, Mr Simmons provided us with a short report on each fuel:

We took the decision to wait for all of the reports instead of sending them to you one by one.

As a consequence you will find attached the four reports. By report, we mean the unedited proposals suggested by the consultant as compromise definitions between all the definitions available for each product. We also have kept his annotated comments since we would like to be as
transparent as possible in the process.

The proposed definitions are just a starting point for discussion. What we would like to do now is to ask each of you to look at the definitions and to send us your comments. We will then gather all the comments received (including our own) and pass them to the consultant for answers (when answers are requested). We will then summarise the comments in a document which will be disseminated to all the InterEnerStat organisations.

The next step will be to conduct a series of meetings (one meeting per fuel) to gather the organisations interested by a particular fuel (oil, coal, renewables, etc.). Some of the meetings will be much longer than others (for instance, the oil meeting will take much more time than the one on gas).

We plan to organise these meetings during the last week of October. So please earmark this week and we will come back to you with a more precise time for each fuel. In order to have successful meetings we would appreciate if you could send us your comments on the definitions by 30 September. This will give us a few weeks to compile your inputs and comments before summarising them and sending them to all of you prior to the end October meetings.

For those who will soon be going on vacation, I would like to wish them a lot of well deserved rest. For those who are already back or will not take any for the time being, no excuse not to have the time to have a close look at the definitions and to send us your comments...

Best regards.

Jean-Yves Garnier
