What is modern aquaculture?
This new semester package consisting of three courses (30 ECTS) has been especially designed for foreign exchange students wishing to gain valuable competence in Norwegian aquaculture here in Northern Norway. The study program is suitable to a wide range of science students studying: general biology, ecology, aquaculture, environmental science or agricultural science.
Through participation the students create activities encouraging experience and learning. All teaching and tuition will be conducted in English. The students learn about environmentally friendly aquaculture production. The history of Norwegian marine farming is a history of the development of an expansive and dynamic export industry. It is one of Norway’s most international industries that is characterised by its natural localisation along most of the coast. The beautiful county of Nordland is the country’s largest aquaculture county for salmon.
The two first modules can be taken independently of one another, whereas the third module has a prerequisite that students have taken the first two modules or are taking all three modules the same semester. This makes the courses compatible with other courses offered by Bodø University College.
After finishing this programme and a successful completion of a bachelor's degree in biology, students can apply to The Master’s Programme in Aquaculture at Bodø University College.
Programme Objective
To provide insight into modern aquaculture with a special focus on Norwegian fish farming. The programme is designed to train students for the biological side of the aquaculture industry.
1. International aquaculture (Module 1) (10 ECTS)
The course gives an introduction to the biological principles of aquaculture production of marine macroalgae, invertebrates and fish in a global perspective. The unit teaches the natural basis of aquaculture production and provides an overview of the biology of important species of algae, bivalves, crustaceans and sea urchins. Topics covered are cultivation methods, development trends, and include reproduction and induction of spawning; hatching and larviculture, metamorphosis and settlement; on growing phases and diseases; limitations and production potential for selected species.
2. Norwegian aquaculture (Module 2) (10 ECTS ) The overall objective of the course is to study the production process of Norwegian aquaculture; broodstock management, larval, juvenile, and adult fish on growth. This course will focus on the farming of typical North Atlantic and Norwegian marine fish species such as salmon and trout as well as cod and halibut.
3. Laboratory and work placement for international students (Module 3) (10 ECTS) This is an introductory course in the university’s total course offering in Aquaculture, but is useful for students who want hands-on knowledge of modern aquaculture. The course is a laboratory/work placement course with main focus on methods for producing fish. The students will be guided through a complete production cycle. Students will be offered placement at the department’s marine laboratories as well as short term activity at professional fish farms to really experience and learn about modern Norwegian aquaculture in practice. The students will be supervised by university college staff and other experts. The course is especially related to the needs and modern-day running of the fast expanding aquaculture industry. This module cannot be taken independently. Students must have taken the first two modules earlier or take all 3 modules the same semester.
Language
All modules are taught in English. However, a Norwegian language course can be taken if wished.
