  • The Department of Social Sciences
The Department of Social Sciences (ASF) covers such research areas as sociology, political science, and history. ASF's master programs include the Master of Arts in Social Science, Master of Social Work and the Master in Comparative Social Work. ASF has also recently been given the right to educate PhD candidates in sociology. In addition the departments offers tailor-made programs towards international students in Norwegian Language and Society and in Northern Studies.

  • The Department of Fisheries and Natural Sciences
The Department of Fisheries and Natural Sciences (AFN) offers a wide range of bachelor's programmes and a master's programme in Aquaculture. The department has applied for a PhD programme in Aquaculture, which we hope will be recognized by the end of 2007.  The department focuses on four major strategic research areas; 1) Aquaculture nutrition and fish health, 2) Reproductive biology, 3) Seafood quality and aquaculture production and 4) Aquaculture ecology. An important methodical platform for all research at the department is genetics and molecular biology.

Ordinary fisheries based on capture are declining globally, but aquaculture is a rapidly expanding sector worldwide. One of the main goals in the AFN research strategy is to generate scientific information that may contribute to more optimal production of cultivated aquatic organisms. Furthermore, sustainable exploitation of coastal marine resources through emphasizing ecological and ethical principles of production is also a vital field for research and education.
