The Lillehammer area is one of Norway’s most well-known travel destinations. The candidates from LUC’s tourism programmes have for many years helped influencing the tourism industry, a growing industry with room for new talents.

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Tourism is suitable for those who wish to work within tourism, either by developing tourist attractions or in tourism businesses.

Through the programme, the students will acquire extensive knowledge of tourism as an industry, and they will have a course combination which may also develop them into good leaders. We also have good contact with the industry so that the students can form a network already while studying. This is useful when applying for jobs.

The first two years include a broad introduction to subjects that form a necessary basis. In the 3rd year, the students choose specialisation with focus on development and management competence. There are two specialisation options:

The courses are not typical Norwegian, but courses which tourism students all over the world take. That means that the students will get an education which also qualifies them for work abroad.

Study period abroad
A study period abroad is recommended in the 4th semester – spring 2008. In 2005, we sent tourism students to 6 countries.

Further education
The programme is an independent education, but it also provides opportunities for further Master’s degree studies in Norway and abroad. At LillehammerUniversityCollege, the Bachelor’s degree programme in Tourism will qualify for a planned Master’s degree in innovation and business development.

Content

The 1st academic year gives an extensive introduction to the tourism courses and the business courses. The 3rd semester includes a continuation of the business courses in addition to method. In the 4th semester, the students can choose which courses they want to take, either at LUC or at other places of study. It is arranged for students to take one or two semesters abroad during the 2nd academic year. In the 3rd academic year, the students choose a specialisation topic, either Management of tourist attractions or Innovation in small tourism businesses. The final stage in the programme is the Bachelor’s thesis which is written based on the chosen specialisation topic. (The students must have passed the 2nd academic year in order to take the 3rd academic year.)

Admission requirements

Higher Education Entrance Qualification/Approved prior learning.

Specialisation

The students choose either Management of tourist attractions or Innovation in small tourism businesses as specialisation topic (30 credits) in the 3rd academic year.

Teaching and learning methods

The programme includes varied working methods such as lectures, seminars and group work. Furthermore, there will be focus on practical exercises, project and field work and essay writing. There will be contact with the tourism industry in order to get insight into how it actually works. The Bachelor’s degree programme is completed by the individual Bachelor's thesis. This gives both relevant practical knowledge and theoretic understanding, which is useful regardless of whether the student applies for a job or continues studying. Read more about the working and evaluation methods under each course.

Assessment

The examination methods vary depending on course. See details under each course.
