Aim and Content

The course includes both macroscopical and microscopical anatomy of the organs of thorax, abdomen and pelvis. It is based on a theoretical survey of all the human organs in terms of macroscopical anatomy, embryology and histology, followed by practical courses on dissection of human specimens as well as microscopical analysis of sections made from organs. The course also includes seminar in surface anatomy, organized as a practical course where students learn to convey the positions of organs related to the surface structures of living bodies. Additionally, the course contains a parallel series of lectures focusing on clinical issues in anatomy, which is related to overarching course contents.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

After completion of the course, the students should be able to account for:

  • Organs of the human body in regards to macroscopical and microscopical attributes, as well as recognize different types of tissue and cells.
  • The relation of cell types and structures to organ functions.
  • The placenta, foetus growth and embryological development of organs.
  • How altered cell- and organ structures may generate disease, and how pathological processes may influence structures and cells.

Skills

After completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Dissect specimens.
  • Technically operate a light microscope, and acquire experience in understanding the expression of spatial (3D) structures through observing two-dimensional sections.
  • Link knowledge of the macroscopical and microscopical anatomy of organs and embryo to physiological mechanisms, pathology and clinical problems, including birth defects - problems which will reappear later in the study programme.
  • Examine living human beings to assess the normal position, size and shape of organs.

Competences

After completion of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Relate to dead bodies (specimens) and organs in a mature and ethically reflected way.
  • Apply their knowledge and skills to engage in further medical tasks, such as diagnostic imaging, surgery and percutaneous techniques.
