Geology as a career

Geologists work in many sectors, with resource mapping, environmental and geotechnical analysis, regional planning and land management, research and teaching.
Geology as a career normally requires a degree in geology or geophysics at Master or Ph.D level. A Bachelor degree opens for work in state or municipal management or, combined with practical teacher training, for a career in teaching.
About 80% of our newly qualified Master and Ph.D students go into the oil industry which continues to provide opportunities both at home and abroad.

Another important sector is comprised of public institutions such as the Norwegian Geological Survey, the Norwegian Polar Institute, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, the State Highway Authority, and universities and colleges. Expansion is also expected in teaching, in local and state authorities (environmental geology and resource management), and in private consultancy.
