Poster Guidelines

A successful poster requires care and planning. In order to increase the likelihood that you will attract the attention of other conference participants and make contact with them, we provide you with some general guidelines for creating a good poster.

The organizers would like to welcome innovative ways of presenting your work at the poster session, such as Power Point presentations etc. If you would like to try out new ways of presenting your poster, please contact the organizers at ocp2@hum.uit.no

The setting

Posters will be displayed in the foyer close to the conference auditorium. There will be a total of 16 posters.

Poster presenters will be provided with a panel which is 89 cm wide and 120 cm high.

Your panel will have your name pinned to it so that you are able to find it.

Pushpins for mounting your posters on the panel will be provided. Please note that the set up and take down is solely the responsibility of the presenter.

Presenting your poster

Poster presenters are requested to be present beside their poster during the poster session in order to speak with other conference participants about your work. Don’t take a passive attitude to the presentation, but make an effort to initiate discussions.

Poster session times will be announced in the conference program.

Designing your poster

The poster is a visual presentation of information, and the format requires a different and challenging approach to the presentations of research. It requires you to be a bit bolder in your style and to communicate effectively with the audience. A poster is NOT a regular paper in large type stuck on a board. The success of your presentation will depend on your willingness and ability to take advantage of the medium:

  • Use pleasing colors to attract attention, and a neutral or grey background

  • Use visual aids rather than text to communicate ideas wherever possible

  • Use pictures where appropriate

  • Give the poster a symmetrical appearance (right/left and top/bottom halves balanced)

  • Provide good examples

  • Use clearly labelled sections to identify the layout of your poster (eg. Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusions)

Remember to keep it simple and easy to read: More material may mean less communication. A general rule of thumb is to have 20 % text, 40 % graphics and 40 % empty space on your poster. Also, be realistic about the amount of time that the average visitor is willing to spend on your poster. Avoid abbreviations, acronyms and jargon that the viewer will not understand.

Make sure that your poster material is large enough: The heading should be readable from a distance of 2 meters, and other material should be viewable from a distance of 1 m. We therefore recommend that you use at least a 16-point font for text and a much larger font size for the title.

Posters should stimulate discussion. Therefore, keep text to a minimum, emphasize graphics and examples, and make sure every item in your poster is necessary.

Immediately below the title of your poster, you should include a section containing a) the name of the author, b) the author’s affiliation, c) your email address, and d), if available, a relevant URL.

Handouts or copies of your abstract should be available.

We wish you good luck with the poster production and presentation!
