Dealing with Nature in the Industrialized Russian North:
Regulated Resources versus Lived Space

In this presentation I will discuss ways of interaction with the natural environment that are characteristic for the soviet/post-soviet society, focusing on industrial communities in the Kola Peninsula. I will give an overview of the ideology of Nature conquest, developed in the official soviet rhetoric. This hegemonic discourse defined nature as meaningless unless it was exploited for human needs. However, for people (so-called newcomers) who were sent by the state to industrialize the North and who populated the new-built industrial cities, interaction with the northern natural environments took an important place in their life experiences. Practices of berries picking, mushrooming, fishing and, to a lesser extent, hunting became widely distributed leisure activities among city inhabitants in the Russian North-West.
What role do these activities play for identity formation of new northerners? How does the state try to control these practices and how do people create different tactics for getting around regulations? Practices of "consumption of nature" have remained crucial during different time periods for leisure and subsistence, but they gained special importance in times of crisis: revolutions, dramatic social shifts and economic changes when people try to adapt to difficult economic conditions.
