Instructions for installing TeX
(also available as a .pdf file - recommended)
Clicking on the link will take you to the download site. If you have any problems installing your TeX system, feel free to ask us for help.
Mac OS X
TeXShop (editor) & teTeX/TeXLive (compiler)
- Just follow the instructions on the download site.
- Open TeXShop, and you can start TeXing right away.
Mac OS 9
OzTeX (compiler) & Alpha (editor)
- Download OzTeX first, then download and open Alpha. You will be guided through a setup process configuring Alpha. (If you don't know what some of the offered options mean, it's best to leave the defaults.)
- Create a simple document, save it with the extension .tex, and typeset it using the TeX menu in Alpha (little lionhead icon). The first time you typeset a document, Alpha will ask you to confirm your TeX settings.
- If your document is successfully typeset, you can view the result using OzTeX's View menu.
Alternatively, get the CD containing OzTeX and Alpha from us (recommended).
Windows (`95 or above)
MiKTeX (compiler, also available on CD from Sylvia) & WinEDT (editor)
- Install MiKTeX first. Run setup.exe to open the setup wizard. (If you get an error message about a special .dll file, run vcredist_enu.exe before setup.exe.)
- Select Install, then select Small. Select the folder containing the archived files (`local repository', setumt21 on the CD.)
- Specify the folder where you want to install the files (usually called texmf), and the local folder for the files you'll add (localtexmf or texmflocal).
- After this, install and open WinEDT (should be straightforward). You can typeset, view and convert files directly from WinEDT by using the icons in the top part of the window.
