Title
The Hungarian Vowel System
Phonology Project Meeting
Date:
03.02.2006
Time:
12:15
Venue:
A2016
Description
Presenter: Bruce Morén.
"I will present the Hungarian vowel system in all its complex glory and propose a representational analysis using the Parallel Structures Model of feature geometry.
Some interesting issues to be addressed are:
- phonetics-phonology mapping
- several types of harmony
- "schizophrenic" vowels that have a dual nature with respect to harmony
- "unstable" vowels that sometimes appear and sometimes do not
- lexical allomorphy
- feature economy - 4 features to contrast 21 vowels
(can it be done???)"
