    Specialisation with Methodology

    Specialisation with Methodology

This detailed information is in addition to the general information course SVF-3023.

Here, in this additional and detailed information you will find a brief overview of the content of the course, and even more important, the dates and deadlines that are applictable for the spring and fall 2004:

    Time frame:
Second and third semester, 10 credits, about 20 hours of individual or small-group supervision.

This informal and low-intensity course starts by agreement with a thesis supervisor in the second semester ( no later than 19. March 2004) and runs towards the end of the third semester.

    Evaluation / Examination:
    Spring 2004:
Project description as a draft for individual master's work / thesis. Evaluated by your individual supervisor: Pass / Fail.

    Fall 2004:
research-paper (extension and re-writing of the Project description) of up to 6000 words. Examination: A-F, F = fail

    Deadlines:

    1. March 04 contact with your supervisor should be established
    19. March 04 the contract between you and your supervisor has to be signed
    26. April 04 submission of project description/project proposal
    15. May 04 the project description must be approved by your supervisor
    1. September 04 the semester kick-off arrangement takes place in the afternoon
we expect you to be back in Tromsø, with reference that each student is supposed to take an elective. Students need to check with the relevant department the details of the individual choosen elective ( an overview of relevant electives will be available by June 2004 )
    1. November 04 submission of the research paper (graded A-F, F=fail)
(more information on the formal requirements for the research paper will be available on this side later)

    Content:
The students choose a research topic and select a supervisor or research group within one of the following fields:

  • Social medicine
  • Political economy
  • Law
  • Social science
  • Political science
  • History
  • Integrated peace studies
  • Psychology

The course integrates the research topic with the methods of research relevant for each field/ project. During the course, students will develop an individual project description (project proposal) for their master's thesis, the process of which is supported through consultation with the thesis supervisor. The project description shall define the epistemological foundation of the proposed empirical work (literature, fieldwork, data collection) and discuss the theoretical and methodological framework and choices for the thesis. The project description will be subject to evaluation ( Pass / Fail ).
Simultaneously, this project description is the students preparation for the fieldwork. Students are encouraged to carry out their fieldwork during the summer 2004.

In fall 2004, the project description has to be extended in order to result into the individual research-paper . This research paper is the starting point for the individual master thesis (SVF-3090) and will be subject to examination (graded A-F, F=fail). Submission deadline of the research paper is 1. November 2004.

    Detailed requirements project proposal
    (2000-3000 words)

Precise requirements for this work should be set by the supervisor – as appropriate to the type of project. Broadly, the proposal should include the following:

  • Theoretical and epistemological context for the investigation, with reference to relevant literature
  • Statement of the research question to be examined
  • Specification of the research methods to be employed

    Detailed requirements research paper
    (5000-6000 words)

This should be a self-sufficient essay, discussing a topic relevant to the thesis work. It might form, for example, the basis of the theoretical discussion or literature review to be integrated later into the Masters thesis itself. It is not necessarily a reworking of the project proposal.
