Content:
The students choose a research topic and select a supervisor or research group within one of the following fields:
Social medicine
Political economy
Law
Social science
Political science
History
Integrated peace studies
Psychology
The course integrates the research topic with the methods of research relevant for each field/ project. During the course, students will develop an individual project description (project proposal) for their master's thesis, the process of which is supported through consultation with the thesis supervisor. The project description shall define the epistemological foundation of the proposed empirical work (literature, fieldwork, data collection) and discuss the theoretical and methodological framework and choices for the thesis. The project description will be subject to evaluation ( Pass / Fail ).
Simultaneously, this project description is the students preparation for the fieldwork. Students are encouraged to carry out their fieldwork during the summer 2005.
In fall 2005, the project description has to be extended in order to result into the individual research-paper . This research paper is the starting point for the individual master thesis (SVF-3901) and will be subject to examination (graded A-F, F=fail). Submission deadline of the research paper is 1. November 2005.
Guidelines for preparation of Master thesis
The Centre for Peace Studies has prepared guidelines that are meant to assist you when working with the preparation of your Master's Thesis.
Detailed requirements project proposal
(2000-3000 words)
Precise requirements for this work should be set by the supervisor – as appropriate to the type of project. Broadly, the proposal should include the following:
Theoretical and epistemological context for the investigation, with reference to relevant literature
Statement of the research question to be examined
Specification of the research methods to be employed
Detailed requirements research paper
(5000-6000 words)
This should be a self-sufficient essay, discussing a topic relevant to the thesis work. It might form, for example, the basis of the theoretical discussion or literature review to be integrated later into the Masters thesis itself. It is not necessarily a reworking of the project proposal.
