This specialization must have a study progression in which a minimum of 30 points are at 2000 level (intermediate level), or equivalent. A academic minimum requirement is set of grade C, which is calculated from the average of the grades awarded for specialization subjects.
5. Qualification awarded
Master of Philosophy.
6. Programme description
In the master’s degree study programme in Philosophy emphasis is placed on the student being able to work with philosophical problems and show an understanding of these in a historical and systematic context. The capacity for independent critical analysis has a central place in this study programme.
7. Competence objectives
The master’s degree study programme provides the basis for a full research training, normally four years, culminating in a doctoral degree.
This study programme qualifies students for teaching positions at polytechnics (høyskoler) and, combined with other education fields at bachelor degree level, at sixth form college (videregående skole) level as well. It also opens up the possibility of working within the cultural sector, e.g. in the media, press and publishing professions, or within government or regional administration. To an increasing extent, individuals with a higher education in Philosophy are obtaining positions in the private business sector.
8. Subject organization
The master’s degree study programme in Philosophy consists of two sections that carry equal weight. In the first section the student must complete philosophical subjects worth 60 points (ECTS).
FIL-3001 Classical Philosophy and FIL-3002 Philosophy in Recent Times are compulsory subjects, each worth 20 points. These are taken in connection with a seminar series and a syllabus of 800 pages for each subject, compiled in connection with the seminars. At least half of the seminar must consist of original literature. The seminars will vary from semester to semester.
The remaining 20 points may be selected from FIL-3003, a free choice subject worth 20 points, or two of the 10-point subjects at FIL-2000 level. The free choice subject may support the master’s degree dissertation, but the essays, which are included in the evaluation, may not be included in the master’s degree dissertation.
The second part consists of a master’s degree dissertation, FIL-3900. Its scope should encompass approx. 80 pages, but it must not exceed 90 pages in length. This counts for 60 points. A 600-page syllabus is affiliated to the master’s degree dissertation, of which at least half should consist of original literature.
The Philosophy subjects are usually completed during the course of the first three semesters, and must be completed at least two weeks before the oral examination. The work with the master’s degree dissertation normally starts during the two initial semesters in parallel with the completion of one or more of the Philosophy subjects, whilst the main work with the dissertation takes place during the fourth semester.
The deadline for the submission of the master’s degree dissertation is 15 May in the Spring semester and 20 November in the Autumn semester.
During the course of the first semester each student will be appointed a supervisor who will provide academic support in the work on the master’s degree study programme.
9. Student exchange
The master’s degree dissertation must be completed at the Philosophy Institute, but it is possible to take Philosophy subjects at universities in partnership with the Institute. The Institute recommends that study abroad should be programmed at an early stage in the study programme.
Approval of study abroad takes place upon application.
10. Teaching and evaluation procedures
Active participation on the part of the students is expected to a greater extent than is the case at bachelor degree level in Philosophy subjects at 3000 level.
The courses will be evaluated by means of essay-writing (two essays 7-8 pages in length for each subject) and student activity during teaching.
The master’s degree dissertation will be evaluated together with a final oral examination that regulates the grade for the master’s degree dissertation.
