FYS-8013: Communications Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Phd level course. | Language of instruction Norwegian, or English by request | Examination semester Autumn | Contents The course is based on previous knowledge of mathematics, statistics and physics corresponding to the subjects MA-1003 Calculus 3, STA-1001 Statistics and Probability 1 and FYS-2007 Statistical Signal Theory. Knowledge of programming is required. The student is introduced to the principles of analog and digital communication. Among the subjects to be lectured within analog communication, are modulation techniques, demodulation, and communication influenced by noise. Within digital communication the following subjects, among other things, will be studied: Analog-to-digital and digital-to analog conversion, data transmission and channel correction, symbol synchronization and symbol interference, pulse-code and pulse-amplitude modulation, quantization error, detection and bit-error probabilities, coded modulation and error correction, in addition to spread-spectrum communication. A considerable part of the course will be laboratory experiments, where principles from the theoretical part will be developed and tested in practice. | Form of teaching Lectures: 40 hr Exercises/Laboratory exercises: 20 hr | Coursework requirements
