Educational aims and academic content for Molecular Quantum Mechanics:
Quantum mechanics is the theory of the micro-cosmos. This theory explains the behaviour of elementary particles, atomic nuclei, atoms, molecules, gasses, liquids and solids. Molecular quantum mechanics describes part of this wide-ranging field. In the research group the focus is on the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids. A central challenge is to determine approximate quantitative solutions for the Schrödinger equation (the fundamental equation within quantum mechanics). Taking these solutions as ones starting point enables, by means of statistical physics, examination of the characteristics of macroscopic objects.
Two interesting, but partially unresolved problems may be mentioned:
- Superconductance – the conductance of electricity without any resistance. Here the challenge is to construct a model which can explain or predict which materials may be superconducting and what the critical temperature is for such materials.
- Hydrogen as an energy carrier. How hydrogen can be stored in an efficient and reliable way is a central question to which storage in solids may be an answer.
Molecular quantum mechanics will be a crucial tool for the study of such phenomena.
Candidates with a master’s degree in molecular quantum mechanics will have achieved the following:
- Sound knowledge of the field’s theoretical basis.
- Familiarity with the most central methods of calculation used in the study of the electronic structure of molecules as well as the models’ possibilities and limits.
- Skills in the use of the numerical models.
