FYS-2003 Topics in theoretical physics
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents The course is based on previous knowledge of mathematics and physics corresponding to the levels of MAT-1003 Calculus 3, FYS-1001 Mechanics, and FYS-1002 Electromagnetism. The course includes the basic elements of analytical mechanics and classical electrodynamics. The mechanics part deals with the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics and gives an introduction to Hamiltonian and dissipative chaos. The electrodynamics part starts from Maxwell's equations and treats gauge transformations and electromagnetic waves and radiation, and finally presents the relativistic formulation of electrodynamics. | Recommended previous qualifications FYS-1001 Mechanics, FYS-1002 Electromagnetism, MAT-1003 Calculus 3 | Form of teaching Lectures: 50 hr Exercises: 30 hr
