Emnebeskrivelse
GEO-3113: Field course in exogene geology
Work load
10 credits (ECTS)
Contents
The field course is based on sedimentological and stratigraphic studies of modern (postglacial) and ancient (Precambrian) sedimentary basins and systems at selected localities in eastern Finnmark. The course gives experience in interpreting sediments deposited in different types of environments using problem-oriented exercises based on mapping, studies of sedimentary sections, and geophysical data (seismic and georadar profiles). The first part of the course uses modern depositional systems (fluviodeltaic sediments in the Tana valley, regressive coastal deposits at Sandfjord) to give an insight into the relationship between depositional process, surface morphology, lithofacies and depositional architecture, and how factors such as sediment supply, basin depth and relative sea-level change influence basin development. The second part of the course uses Precambrian sediments in the Varanger region to demonstrate sediments which are ancient analogues of the modern sediments or which represent other types of depositional environments.
Objectives: The aim of the course is to give field-based experience in stratigraphic interpretation and an insight into how different factors influence deposition in sedimentary basins.
