This is a free choice subject in the bachelor degree study course in History and forms part of the bachelor degree in Russian Studies. It serves as a subsidiary subject for Russian, Social Studies and the History of Ideas.
Contents
The time of Stalin and Stalinism is probably the most central issue within Soviet history today. It was in the time of Stalin that the October Revolution came about in 1917, in the sense that fundamental structural changes to society were experienced for the first time in Russia during this phase. Others will maintain that the time of Stalin, with his super-industrialization and inner terror represented a deviation from real Bolshevism. Through this area of specialization we shall try to clarify how Stalinism came about and what distinguished it as a societal system. Emphasis will be placed on presenting different historiographical perspectives on this subject.
