HIS-1016: The Conquering of the Polar Region. Science, Economy and Politics Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Autumn
| Objectives This course aims to illustrate the Norwegian activity in the Polar regions from around 1870 to the present. The Polar regions returned to focus toward the end of the 19th century. This was demonstrated through increased commercial activity in the Arctic Ocean, whaling both in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, increased mining activity on Svalbard, as well as surveying and research expeditions in the polar areas. Norwegian interests were also more profiled through active foreign policy. The Norwegian polar activity in the interwar period has been characterized as imperialism of the Arctic Ocean. | Contents The notion that Norway faced north, in politics, economics and research, will be studied in an international context using literature and other sources. Furthermore, this course will offer insight into the cause behind the new interest in the northern regions, e.g. by looking at this in the context of nation building and policies of `Norwegianization¿. Was it because of increased commercial activity that Norway now actively sought to acquire land and sea areas within the Arctic, or was the commercial activity a result of an active Norwegian foreign policy? What role did the Norwegian Polar researchers play during the period of Arctic Ocean imperialism? | Form of teaching Lectures/seminars | Coursework requirements
Two oral presentations during the course.
