Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science has an active research environment in biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, physics, mathematics and statistics. Within these subject areas, education is provided at all levels. The faculty offers three-year Bachelor, two-year Masters and five-year Masters in addition to Ph. D studies.
Masters programmes are offered in technological studies, computer science, communication, micro electronics and space physics, interdisciplinary programme, Arctic nature and agriculture and lecturer education.
Arctic research, biotechnological studies, environmental research, resource research and space research are important key words within several of the specialist fields of study. Many of the research projects are based on problems connected with Northern Norway and other northern areas, but international conditions are also of great importance for research activity within the faculty.
The Faculty of Science has six departments::- Department of Biology
- Department of Physics
- Department of Geology
- Department of Computer Science
- Department of Chemistry
- Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Personnel at the Department of Physics at the Northern Lights Observatory have responsibility for large research instillations away from the university campus, including EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Radar) the instillations at Ramfjordmoen (about 20 km from Tromsø) and the EISCAT radar and other equipment at Svalbard. The faculty has its own climate laboratory and green house at Ny Ålesund in Svalbard.
The faculty is actively involved in the development of the Northern Norwegian Science Centre.
