Faculty of Social Science
The Faculty of Social Science consists of 10 departments: archaeology, philosophy, history, education, planning and community studies, psychology, religious studies, social anthropology, sociology and political science.
The faculty offers programmes at both Bachelor and Masters level in each of the specialist subject areas in addition to studies at Ph. D level. Several interdisciplinary Bachelor and Masters programmes are also available.
The faculty’s structure creates the opportunity for academic co-operation between social scientific and humanistic disciplines.
The research and education at the Faculty of Social Science covers a wide range of themes, where some of the specialist fields have their empirical focus on North Norwegian and Arctic conditions, while others are concerned with international relations. Much of the research activity is arranged with approaches that have a particular significance for Northern Norway.
During the education, which is of course influenced by the research being carried out in the respective departments, emphasis is also placed on introducing the students to the various fields’ theoretical perspectives and methods.
The faculty is also responsible for the following centres:
- The Norwegian Historical Data Centre, a national institution that produces historical records in electronic format. One of the centre’s main tasks is registering data from the original national censuses and church records found in the archives.
- Centre for Peace Studies, which offers the internationally studied Masters programme in Peace and Conflict Transformation.
