The Centres
The University of Tromsø has established four centres to co-ordinate and enhance research in these specialist fields:- Arctic research
- Environment and development studies
- Saami, indigenous and minority questions
- Women’s perspective in research
The Roald Amundsen Centre for Arctic Research
One of the objectives of the University of Tromsø is to be a leading university in the field of Arctic studies. As a result, the Amundsen Centre was established in 1989. The centre’s primary objective is to strengthen Arctic research at the university by, among other things, disseminating information, creating closer contacts, strengthening national and international awareness of Arctic research at the University and through multidisciplinary collaboration.
The Amundsen Centre shall ensure that the university plays an active roll in research and higher education within the Barents Euro Arctic Region. The centre shall also work to increase Tromsø's influence in the development of national and international polar research programmes.

Centre for Environment and Development Studies (SEMUT)
Environment and development is a major challenge globally – also for the world’s northernmost university. SEMUT was established in 1989 to pursue the recommendations of the report Our Common Future by the World Commission on Environment and Development.
SEMUT is a joint initiative by the University of Tromsø and the NORUT group.
The centre shall stimulate, initiate and co-ordinate research and education in this field – and be a link to relevant national and international institutions and research programmes.
SEMUT focuses on global issues and its work is mainly directed towards developing countries.

Sámi dutkamiid guovddáš /Centre for Saami Studies
The University of Tromsø established the Centre for Sámi Studies in 1990. The centre’s objective is to contribute to increased research and education on indigenous and minority conditions generally and Saami conditions in particular. The centre shall strengthen recruiting, stimulate multidisciplinary collaboration and contribute to co-ordinating education and research within this field. Information on Saami conditions and the creation of contacts, both nationally and internationally, is another of the centre’s tasks.

Centre of Women’s Studies and Women in Research (KVINNFORSK)
KVINNFORSK was established in 1995. The centre shall contribute to the strengthening the competence of women’s research within different fields and contribute to the recruitment of female students and researchers.
The main means of achieving these aims are:- Arranging specialist opportunities across all fields
- Conferences
- Women’s Research Marathon, which profiles female researchers at the university
- Annual distribution of strategic grants
- Awarding of the Åse Hiorth Lerviks Prize for the best thesis written by a female student
One of KVINNFORSK’s top priorities is the establishment of ”meeting places”, arenas for professional exchanging and development of women and gender research at the university.
KVINNFORSK startet i 1995. Senteret skal bidra til å styrke kompetansen i kvinneforskning innen ulike fagområder og bidra til økt rekruttering av kvinnelige studenter og kvinner til forskning.
