Tromsø University Museum
Tromsø University Museum was founded in 1872 and is the oldest scientific institution at the University of Tromsø.
The museum consists of six scientific departments, a public service department and an administration department. In addition, the University Library has its own section at the museum.
The scientific departments deal with collection, research and arrangements within Geology, Botany, Zoology, Archaeology, Cultural History, Saami Ethnography and recent cultural history.
Each department has large collections and display areas where the department’s specialist field is presented. Research and displays are concentrated on North Norway and other northern regions.
The public service department is responsible for the museum’s external business. In addition to permanent exhibitions, each year the museum brings in guest displays. The Tromsø University Museum attracts around 100,000 visitors annually. The museum also has travelling exhibitions, which it sends within this part of the country and within North Calotte.
The popular science periodical Ottar is the museum’s flagship. Five editions are published annually, focusing on North Norwegian and Arctic nature and culture. The museum’s English publication, Way North, has the same profile and is published annually.
