The report is based on comments from teachers from sixth-form colleges in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark, who attended the summer course for teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) at Worcester College, now ‘University College, Worcester’, England. The course is a collaborative enterprise between the college and UNIKOM, now ‘the Department of Education’, University of Tromsø. The course was financed by the Education Offices in the three counties.
In the report one can read about the participant’s evaluation of their experiences, but it is also a record of who attended, their personal aims for attending and their views about what is required to help keep a teacher an up-dated and inspired teacher of English. Participants visited various places of cultural interest, such as Stratford on Avon where they also visited the theatre and saw Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The contents of the report also give valuable information about the schools they visited
For those who have attended the course this material is also a thorough documentation of what was experienced, as answers to the seven questions they were asked are mainly based on the logbook contents that each participant kept during the course. In this report some of the actual logbook comments have been included, as well as a photo of participants and a poem written by one of them.
The report is also an important source of information with regard to the organisation and running of a longer intensive course in the UK, for adult learners. It documents the importance of the social aspect of a course of this length.
