The course is a collaborative enterprise between University College, Worcester, England and the Department of Learning and Teacher Education (PLP) now ‘the Department of Education’, University of Tromsø. The course was financed by the three Education Offices in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark.
The content of this report is based on the evaluation of 33 teachers from sixth-form colleges. The participants were teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) either general English or vocational English, and vocational teachers, who did not teach English, which was a challenge with regard to the programme, but the timetable shows how this was coped with.
The questionnaire was re designed and was partly for crossing off points and there is only one question that requires an open answer. Even so the questionnaire still covers the same areas that had been investigated in previous questionnaires. The report tells about the participant’s evaluation of their experiences, but is also a record of who attended, personal aims for attending and views about what is required to help keep a teacher an up-dated and inspired teacher through personal development. The report includes information about the schools that were visited. It is hoped that the information included in the reports will help with the continuation of network building between teachers and institutions in Norway and England.
Logbooks have continued to play an important role as a basis for evaluation, as well as a diary for the participants’ future use. The report shows that a mixed group with different aims can work together successfully and that such cooperation is important within schools. Often vocational students are not so geared to continue with the learning of English, but with vocational teachers who now understand its importance there is an added motivation factor, especially if both teachers of English and vocational teachers work together.
The report is therefore an important source of information with regard to the organisation and running of a longer intensive course, with adult learners who have different personal aims.
