The course is a collaborative enterprise between University College, Worcester, England and the Department of Learning and Teacher Education (PLP) now ‘the Department of Education’, University of Tromsø. The course was financed by, the three Education Offices in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark.
The content of this report is based on the evaluation of 30 teachers from sixth-form colleges. The participants were teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) either general English or vocational English. A questionnaire made for the previous course was used, and is made up of 16 questions that can be crossed off or numbered in order of preference and a 17th question with 4 points for open answers. As in previous years the questionnaire was handed out at the beginning of the course so that participants have time to reflect upon the contents during the course.
The report records who attended and there is a chart which sums up which schools have sent teachers to the course since 1997. Each report includes personal aims and expectations for attending the course, which is also a basis for the final evaluation together with the participants’ own logbook notes. The report includes information about the schools that were visited, as well as other educational visits, which this year included a visit to Bath and Stratford on Avon, where participants visited the theatre and saw Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. It is hoped that the information included in the reports will help with the continuation of network building between teachers and institutions in Norway and England.
Teachers point out in their evaluation the importance of keeping up with changes in approaches to teaching, contemporary literature, how to present classical literature, cultural background and brushing up their own English. They are also concerned with network building and keeping contact between schools. They would also like to have follow-up courses in Norway. The latter has unfortunately not been possible financially.
